What is veneer and what does it happen?


At all times, furniture and door canvases made of solid natural wood were appreciated by connoisseurs quite highly. Wood is an environmentally friendly material that has a number of indisputable advantages, but it has a significant drawback, which is the high cost of finished products. An alternative option, more affordable for the population, was products made of composite panels pasted with natural wood veneer. In appearance, such products look like natural wooden, but their weight is much less, and in addition, there are features related to the duration of operation. Today, furniture or door canvases made of natural wood are produced only in exclusive batches, and for mass production, veneer versions are used.

What is it?


The word "veneer" in German means "chip." This definition did not appear by chance, because the first manufacturers of veneer in Europe were Germans. The technology was developed in the XIX century, when thin webs were cut from large logs of various tree species with the help of specially designed woodworking machines. The continuous surface of the cut wood material retained all the properties of the wood, including its natural pattern. Veneer thickness varies and can be either 1 mm or 12 mm, which directly depends on the wood species and the wood processing technique. Over time, German technology was mastered in Russia, but the name of the wood cut remained to sound in German - veneer. Sections of natural wood have found wide use in the manufacture of not only furniture products, but also musical instruments. Precious sections of rare tree species were pasted with cheap blanks, and the result was things that could hardly be distinguished in appearance from those cut out of natural massif.

The method of veneer production makes it possible to distinguish 3 varieties of veneer.

Natural - such veneer is obtained by cutting a thin layer of wood from a log rotating around its axis. You can remove veneer in various ways - by freezing, planing or sawing. The method of sawing is most often used for processing conifers, while the wood is sawed into thin layers. Planing is used in the manufacture of the most expensive types of veneer, which is removed along the entire width of a log rotating in a horizontal plane. Ribbed - natural material looks like thin sheets of wood glued together in the edge area. The cost of such veneer is low, but the operational properties are quite high and long-lasting.

Reconstructed - for the production of this material, sections of tropical wood species with fast growth properties are used. Such veneer is painted and glued, the color may differ from natural traditional shades, but this material is completely natural, its second name is fine line. Natural wood veneer has various properties, among which there are pros and cons. The positive properties are that thin slices of plates are used in technologies for the manufacture of decorative finishing materials, furniture products and other objects that are indistinguishable in appearance from massive wooden analogues. The high decorativeness of veneer is due to the production of many textural patterns of annual rings of wood, and a solid board cannot have such properties. A thin sheet of veneer is versatile in its use - it can be glued to the surface with almost any relief configuration.
