Solid Wood Glued Panels
Interior items are assembled from various materials of natural and artificial origin. To create, you need a reliable, durable raw material that can withstand operation under certain conditions. In the review, we will understand in detail what furniture is made of.
Popular raw materials
Various types of materials are used to assemble modern interior items. Substances have unique strength and decorative characteristics. Each variety has strengths and weaknesses to keep in mind.
Massif
The traditional material for furniture is natural wood. Environmentally friendly raw materials can be easily processed, it can be made into a structure of any complexity and shape. If you touch the surface, it is warm to the touch. Pros of the substance:
Decorativeness. Beautiful natural texture does not need to be hidden under paint.
Normalizes the microclimate in the room. The barely tangible woody aroma creates a pleasant atmosphere.
Durability. With proper operation, they will last at least 20 years.
There are two types of furniture array. Solid is created from a single piece of wood (shields, bars). The homogeneity of the structure provides strength and resistance to increased loads. The glued material is made of thin wood layers, which are assembled into a monolith using a special fixing composition. The latter species is slightly inferior in price and performance to the former.
Modern furniture is created from different types of wood. The most popular are birch, pine and cherry. The author's models are assembled from a rare sandal, luxurious red variety and expensive oak.
The wood furniture looks very beautiful and respectable. High price is the main drawback of the material. Interior objects from the massif are an order of magnitude higher than analogues from composites. Due to the cost, models are rarely made entirely of wood. Most often used for the facades of cabinets, countertops and frames of sofas, beds.
Wood is a heavy raw material. The minus is manifested during transportation or during rearrangement in the room. Products are afraid of mechanical damage. In wet conditions, moisture is strongly absorbed, and at high temperature and directed ultraviolet light - they dry out.
MDF
MDF is a popular material for the manufacture of body furniture. Boards are created from fine wood flour. Binders (lignin, paraffin) are added to the raw material, then compressed under pressure. As a result, very strong raw materials are obtained, which in terms of characteristics resembles wood as much as possible.
Pros:
• High density. Fasteners do not fall out of the surface.
• Plasticity. You can create bent shapes of any complexity.
• Moisture resistance. Paraffin impregnation repels water, steam.
• Easy to process. Like wood, it does not crumble during milling. You can make carvings, drawings.
• Resistance to fungi. MDF plates do not have favorable conditions for microorganisms.
Composite slabs are used to create home and office furniture. The material is cheaper than wood, but more expensive than the rest of the pressed raw materials. To reduce the cost of interior items, facades are made from MDF, and walls and partitions are made from more accessible analogues.
Composite furniture materials react painfully to high temperatures. At + 70 С, the plates buckle, lose shape, the decorative layer floats and folds. Structures made of MDF are prohibited to be located next to heating devices, oven or stove.
CHIPBOARD
Chip boards consist of pressed sawdust. Synthetic resins are used as a binder. According to the quality of raw materials, the material is divided into 3 groups, but the first two are used for the production of furniture.
Chipboard - inexpensive, affordable slabs, from which most of the interior items are made. The weight of the structure is lighter than the wood and MDF variants, so there are no problems with transportation and movement.
Low strength is the main disadvantage of chip boards. The material swells and crumbles under wet conditions. To increase the indicator, the raw materials are covered with a decorative and protective layer on top. Due to the lack of density, fasteners do not hold well in the chipboard.
LAMINATED CHIPBOARD
The modification of chip boards differs from classic chipboards in the presence of a thin laminated film. After pressing, the material is ground and wrapped with a polymer coating. The top gives the products a more presentable look and protects against moisture, scratches.
Pros:
• resistance to high temperatures;
• Ease of processing
• low cost.
Short-life is the main drawback of furniture made from LDSP. The maximum interior item will last 10 years. The laminated coating will stand, giving the structure a sloppy ("battered") look. Instead of high-quality resin, formaldehyde can be used in plates.
