LVL timber: wood with metal strength
The material is suitable for the erection of supporting, as well as other high-load structures. Its full name is Laminated Veneer Lumber, abbreviated LVL (in Russian-language transcription of LVL).
This is a woodworking product in the form of beams, boards, bars. It is made by gluing veneer layers. Fibers of adjacent sheets are arranged in parallel.
Advantages
LVL brus has many unique properties. This ensures wide applicability, resistance to loads. The main advantages are:
Dimensional stability. They are unchanged regardless of humidity fluctuations, temperature changes.
Resistance to damp. The material does not warp, does not deform, its natural shrinkage is minimal.
High strength. LVL is preferable to glued bar. It can be used for the arrangement of long floors, bearing supports, other similar structures, for rafters in roofs, attics, as well as for the arrangement of interfloor floors in the construction of frame houses, as well as in the production of doors, windows, stairs.
Variety of sizes. In the vendor catalog, you can select workpieces of any width and length (taking into account the capabilities of the production equipment).
Easy processing, easy installation. The material is easily cut into the required fragments, securely fixed in the manufacture of building structures.
The ultimate tensile and bending loads along the fibers at LVL are about twice as high as those of other lumber. Due to this, beams up to 18 meters long can be used, while the length of solid wood structures usually does not exceed 8 meters. The advantage is also that the cost of LFLs varies slightly as the length changes. This is an important difference from glued analogues, which, with an increase in size, are rapidly becoming more expensive.
Compared to concrete or reinforced concrete products, LVL structures can be laid, mounted, moved without the use of lifting equipment. This reduces construction costs. Due to their relatively low weight, they do not create excessive stress on the foundation, walls, and other supporting elements of the building.
Production
Unique technological and physical properties of LFL are determined by the manufacturing method. Veneer sheets are glued so that the seams of the next layer are staggered, follow evenly throughout the product.
Coniferous ridge is used as raw material for manufacturing LVL-bar. They are subjected to thermal and hydrotreatment, undergo sawing, debarking. It is then fed to a gusher. Further, gushing is carried out, and special automation with specialized software controls the process. High-precision laser units are used to measure blanks and align them.
The resulting veneer is tested for moisture level, after which it is sorted by uniformity, density, and other characteristics. Depending on the grade, the material is used to produce bars of different strengths. Veneer is glued using adhesive composition based on oxidation-resistant resin. Thanks to this, LVL has high fire safety indicators.
The manufacturing technology of this material is comparable to plywood production, but the fibers of adjacent layers are placed not perpendicularly, but in parallel. The LVL bar is made of relatively thick (3 mm) veneer of pine, spruce or larch, and the thickness of the finished product can reach 75 mm.
